Little Blue Heron
This summer a juvenile Little Blue Heron visited the pond. Young Little Blues are distinctive by their size, pale, dull green legs and blue/gray bill. Most common along the southeastern and Gulf coasts of the U. S. From time-to-time juveniles show up here in the Midlands of South Carolina. My suspicion is that they are driven away from prime territory by adult wading birds and that they fly this far inland looking for suitable feeding grounds. This bird showed up mid-summer, stayed a few days and left.
