Welcome
This website contains accumulated—and accumulating—items from my 80 continuing years. The material is both professional and personal: Professional topics include archaeological and anthropological projects, teaching materials, publications, news items and more. Personal information includes reminiscences, photographs, and family history as well as posts and pages dedicated to my interests in travel, natural history, yoga/meditation, religion/philosophy, politics, and living in our Cedar Creek Community.
The site consists dated journal entries as well as pages accessed from the Main Menu. These pages primarily have to do with my professional history. True to the site subtitle, the pages are not complete, rather they are accumulating as I have time to add material. I will appreciate comments and/or suggestions on either posts or pages.
My retirement days in Cedar Creek are spent working on our home and “farm,” playing with our dog Gryffindor, walking and birding the countryside, and entertaining dear friends, both personal and professional. If you like, please contact me via this website and come visit!
This a photo our son Sam took of me on a a recent visit to the North Carolina mountains. In retirement I have been honored with the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of South Carolina, as well as with the J. C. Harrington Medal from the Society for Historical Archaeology for my lifetime contributions to the field. (But, I’m anticipating a good bit more lifetime, and I hope to make a few more contributions as the future comes along 🙂 ) LF
Acknowlegments
This site began when my dear wife, Aline, encouraged me to set up a website to promote a recent book. It came to being when my computer-skilled friend, Gary Ward, offered to coach and assist in creating the site. Later, the project evolved as my friends Irina Cromer and Kelly Goldberg suggested I write something autobiographical. Through the suggestions and help of these friends, I’ve found a platform to gather family and professional history for those who may be interested and to informally engage and write about my current interests. I also appreciate responses to this web site from our adult children, Sam Ferguson and Amy Ferguson Cook, who most always show encouragement for the various things, whacky and serious, their father sets out to do.

Hi Leland. Love this!!
Thanks, Bill. This may be my second response. I’m still learning how to deal with the website!
Thanks Bill!
Hello, Leland! I have enjoyed touring your website. The pictures, the light sprinkle of humor, your testimonies and the many archaeology projects entertaining, enlightening and provoking. “This Land Is Our Land” struck me and motivated me to research the Cambodia bombing & the Kent State Massacre on Wikipedia. “The Black Lives Matter: The Witness of a White Man” reveals how everyday events can have very different outcomes and emotions due to one’s skin color. I enjoyed many of your excellent photos.
I especially enjoyed the Corona Virus Quarantine Photo of March 22, 2020, where mother & daughter are talking on their cell phones, while looking at each other through a window.
Thanks sharing your good work and pictures.
Steve, Thanks for viewing and responding to the website. I’m very pleased that you like it. You and Susan have inspired me to expand my photography and include telephoto images of birds, and for that I am thankful. Also, I can’t tell you how many times I’m walking around this place and see or hear a bird, recognize it, and remember that I learned the identification from one of you. Best wishes to you both, and I look forward to birding again when the corona dust settles down. Leland
